An itch can be caused by any number of factors such as stings, insect bites, poison ivy, contact with an chemical irritant, allergic reaction to any number of environmental factors and even an ainti-immune reaction. With this many causes of itching it is impossible to classify all of them and if your itchy condition continues for weeks or months a medical doctor may be needed.

For minor stings, bites and contact to irritants a topical treatment bis usually enough to prevent the histamine reaction from causing long term itching. The topical anti itch creams, lotions or balms that are used should be all natural without any synthetic ingredients which may cause harm to your body through its absorbtion into the bloodstream.

For more severe itch reactions an oral over the counter anti-histamine may be necessary to prevent the histamine reaction from progressing. If this happens the allergic reaction can quickly progress to a life threatening condition that will need an injection of epinephrine also known as an Epi Pen. Even if the patient seems stabilized after the injection a trip to the hospital is recommended.

Obviously the best way to reduce itching is to avoid all causes of potential itch causing agents. Better said than done due to the numerous causes of itching and also since every person has different degress of reaction to these causes. Some people are highly allergic to poison ivy while others can be rubbed all over without any reaction at all.

When in doubt use caution and common sense when dealing with irritating agents or around bugs that bite or sting!
